Open Range, Kevin Costner’s 2003 neo-western, is now streaming free on Tubi.
If you’ve been missing Costner since he announced his Yellowstone exit in June 2024, Open Range hits a lot of the same notes. You get the land fights, the frontier code, the sense that justice has to be earned. And the timing lines up with the renewed interest in Costner’s older westerns after the rough Horizon: An American Saga rollout, with Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 underperforming in theaters, according to box office reports, and Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 indefinitely delayed by New Line Cinema.
Costner directed the film, and it follows cattlemen Boss Spearman (Robert Duvall) and Charley Waite (Costner) as they’re pushed into a range war with a corrupt landowner. Its interest in land, power, identity, loyalty, independence, perseverance, and the slow fading of frontier mythology feels, looking back, like an early blueprint for the modern western style that would later define Costner on TV.
It’s also one of his strongest directing jobs, and one of his most restrained. The movie is more controlled and more character-driven than Dances With Wolves or The Postman. It gives Robert Duvall plenty of room to hold the center of the drama, pairs him smartly with Costner’s quieter, reactive performance, and backs it all up with the atmosphere people still praise, a famous final shootout, and $68.3 million worldwide on a $22 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.
