Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, visited the All-In podcast last Friday and expressed support for regulating artificial intelligence through an international agency. According to Altman, it is very possible that “cutting-edge AI systems are capable of causing significant global harm.”
For the CEO, these systems will have “a negative impact far beyond the scope of a single country.” And he believes that they should be regulated by an “international agency that studies the most powerful systems” to ensure that they undergo “reasonable security tests.”
According to Business Insider, Altman argues that an international agency would offer greater flexibility when it comes to regulating AI than national legislations. The speed at which artificial intelligence evolves is one of the reasons.
On March 13th, the European Parliament gave the green light to the Artificial Intelligence Law that would serve to, for example, prohibit certain AI practices and apply transparency rules for such systems. The rules will be applied starting from May 2025 and each member state must create its own national supervisory agency.
OpenAI announces the arrival of news to ChatGPT
On the other hand, OpenAI announced through social media that we would see “new things” this Monday, May 13th at 10 AM PT. For now, we know from Altman himself that it is not GPT 5 or the release of their highly anticipated search engine. However, it is something that people will “love“.
However, the fact that GPT 5 is not being presented now does not mean that it is not being developed at the moment. According to Business Insider, OpenAI is immersed in the development of GPT 5 and its release would occur at some point this coming summer.
