OpenAI is facing 30 new lawsuits tied to the February 2026 Tumbler Ridge massacre, bringing the company to more than 50 consumer-harm cases overall. The latest complaints were filed for witnesses to the February 2026 attack, including students and educators. Eight people were killed and 27 were wounded. Add the 7 earlier suits from victims’ families, and the Tumbler Ridge total now stands at 37.
The new suits accuse OpenAI, along with CEO Sam Altman, of negligence, product liability, and aiding a mass shooting over ChatGPT’s alleged role. Other consumer-harm cases against the company involve similar claims tied to shootings, suicides, and stalking.
According to the plaintiffs, internal records flagged the shooter’s account in June 2025 for “gun violence activity and planning.” They say notifying the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) was recommended, then overruled, and that OpenAI missed a chance to step in. The chat logs, though, still haven’t been made public.
OpenAI says it respects the legal process, that it didn’t ignore safety concerns, and that it saw no “imminent and credible risk” that required contacting law enforcement. The company is also expected to argue that any connection between ChatGPT and the shooting is too remote to support liability.
For anyone following this closely, the Tumbler Ridge cases may end up setting the terms for a much bigger fight: whether courts see chatbots as tools, as publishers, or as something else entirely. That decision would reach well beyond this case, into monitoring, escalation policies, and crisis intervention.
