Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale backs US plan for 30,000 lab monkeys
After China halted research-macaque exports in 2020, Safer Human Medicine laid out plans for a macaque-breeding operation in Bainbridge, in Decatur County, Georgia. The project has $20 million in backing from Joe Lonsdale’s 8VC and is meant to produce as many as 30,000 monkeys for biotech firms, drug developers, and medical researchers. That plan is moving forward under a cloud of lawsuits and sharp local opposition.
The company’s argument is straightforward: the US needs a homegrown answer to the research-primate shortage that followed China’s export cutoff in 2020. Supporters say that shortage pushed prices up and slowed work in infectious disease, neuroscience, and drug-safety testing. Lonsdale has described the investment as “pro-human” and has framed it as part of the country’s life-sciences infrastructure.
But the proposed Safer Human Medicine site in Bainbridge is already drawing legal and political heat. There are lawsuits, allegations tied to open-meetings rules, and growing criticism over public health, waste, animal welfare, and basic transparency. Founder Jim Harkness is also facing scrutiny over his earlier role at Envigo. Envigo’s parent company later pleaded guilty and agreed to pay $35 million after the beagle-facility case in Virginia.
Anyone who follows biotech policy should keep an eye on this fight. Supporters still argue that primates remain necessary in a narrow set of cases. Critics, along with some primatologists, say the suffering can’t be justified and point instead to organ-on-a-chip systems, in-vitro testing, computer simulations, and other New Approach Methodologies. The Safer Human Medicine project is planned for Georgia and, if it goes ahead, would feed into US biomedical research.

"en-US": "Jesús Pina follows what artificial intelligence is actually changing in the software people use every day, telling apart what already works from what is still only an announcement. What interests him is the practical effect: which tool saves real time, which one stops halfway and which one deserves a second look before you install it. He works daily with AI models inside Softonic's own editorial process, so he knows their limits fairly well.",
