Rivian is set to accelerate its growth in the electric vehicle market with the upcoming production of its new midsize R2 SUV, projected to begin in the first half of 2026.
Starting at an affordable price of $45,000, the R2 will mark a significant price reduction compared to Rivian’s current offerings, the R1S and R1T, which start at approximately $77,700 and $71,700, respectively.
CEO RJ Scaringe recently provided a glimpse of the R2’s body crafted with production dies, emphasizing that the model will maintain the “Rivian essence” that has resonated with its customer base.

Rivian’s CFO, Claire McDonough, reported that preparations at the company’s Normal, Illinois plant are well underway, with sourcing for the R2 nearly complete at 95%.
The R2 is set to feature Rivian’s innovative Maximum drive unit, which boasts a highly efficient design. This new powertrain technology reduces the welds in the stator assembly from 264 to just 24, improving efficiency with fewer bearings and an integrated rotor shaft and gear. This cutting-edge development reflects Rivian’s commitment to enhance vehicle performance through engineering advancements.
Looking ahead, Rivian plans to ramp up production capabilities significantly at its new facility in Georgia, which is projected to come online by 2028 with an annual capacity of up to 400,000 vehicles. For context, the company produced just under 50,000 EVs last year, highlighting the scale of its ambitious plans.
Beyond the R2, Rivian aims to broaden its electric vehicle lineup with the anticipated launch of the R3 crossover and the tri-motor R3X hatchback, making it clear that the company is poised for a promising future on both domestic and international fronts.
