Samsung has taken the wraps off the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, and the main upgrade this time is pretty obvious: both the outer and inner screens are wider.
Reports say the standard Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch main screen with a 4:3 ratio. When it’s folded, the shape is closer to a passport. Open it up, and it feels much more like a small tablet for messages, maps, email, reading, gaming, web browsing, and video.
Early reports out of South Korea suggest the standard Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is outselling the more traditional Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra in pre-orders. That’s true even though Samsung reportedly gave more stock to the standard model from the start, and several reviewers say the wider design gets more convincing the longer they use it.
If you want a foldable phone that feels less cramped on the front screen and more practical once it’s open, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is one to keep an eye on.
There are still trade-offs. Typing in landscape can feel like a stretch, some third-party apps and split-screen layouts still aren’t fully optimized, and Android 17 plus Google’s Jetpack Compose should be a real test of how ready developers actually are for wider foldables.
Samsung also seems to have improved the hinge and done more to keep the crease under control, but the screens are still the real story.
