Shift at Midnight landed on Steam on July 22, 2026 and drops you into the late shift at a rural American convenience store in the 1990s, then twists the whole setup into horror: some of the customers are disguised doppelgangers, and you have to catch them before they kill you.
By July 27, it had already blown past 37,000 concurrent players on Steam. Streamers got hold of it, clips started circulating, social feeds did the rest, and suddenly it turned into one of the indie games everyone was talking about this week. It already has an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam, too.
A lot of the game is built around ordinary store work. You restock shelves, ring up customers, accept deliveries, clean the place up, and try to hit your nightly quotas. At the same time, you’re checking IDs, asking questions, and matching what people tell you against an in-game database to figure out who’s actually human.
If co-op horror is your thing, this one is easy to recommend. One bad call is all it takes for a boring retail shift to turn into straight survival horror, with players hiding, barricading doors, setting traps, and trying to make it to sunrise. A post-launch patch already bumped co-op from three players to six, which feels exactly right for the kind of messy horror-comedy chaos people love when they’re playing with friends.
The game comes from solo developer Bun Muen and publisher Kwalee, and you can download Shift at Midnight right now on PC and Xbox Series X|S, or play it through Xbox Game Pass. More updates are planned for both story and endless modes, as Bun Muen’s passion project keeps growing into a full-time job.
