On May 21, 2026, Sony filed a patent called “Controller-Driven Video Game Console Login.” It describes a PlayStation Network sign-in system that would use the DualSense controller as an extra verification step.
In the setup outlined in the filing, a PlayStation console sends a login request to the DualSense. The controller then checks that it’s really you through a nearby device, like a smartphone, and sends that approval back using Bluetooth, NFC, proximity sensing, light, sound, or haptics. In effect, the controller becomes a hardware factor, which could shut out remote attackers even if they already had your password, passkey, or 2FA details.
If account theft is on your mind, this patent is worth watching. Sony still hasn’t said whether current DualSense hardware can actually handle this, or how account recovery would work if the controller was lost, broken, out of battery, or simply not available.
That may be the bigger PlayStation Network problem, honestly: account recovery itself. Reports dating back to late 2025 said attackers were able to convince support to restore accounts with limited information, including transaction IDs, even when 2FA or passkeys were turned on. Colin Moriarty’s case brought that issue into sharper focus.
There’s nothing to download yet. But the patent applies to PlayStation consoles, and it arrives while Sony is once again facing questions about PlayStation Network security. Those concerns come after the 2011 PlayStation Network breach that affected 77 million users, two confirmed incidents in 2023, and complaints in June 2026 about unexplained adult-themed games showing up in the Recently Played lists of some PlayStation 5 users.
