There will be no turning back: Blu-ray will gradually be leaving our stores. This has been confirmed by Sony in an interview with AV Watch, where the company admits that “development and production will gradually come to an end.”
Sony has confirmed that it will end the production of “recordable optical disc media,” which includes Blu-ray. Specifically, the 25 GB BD-RE, 50 GB BD-RE DL, 100 GB BD-RE XL, or 128 GB BD-R XL will no longer be available for consumers.
The definitive date of their cessation is unknown, so they will continue selling them “for the time being.” According to the company, the end will come after discussing it with their distribution partners and main retailers.
The main reason for its discontinuation has been its low economic performance. However, this does not mean that we will stop seeing other products, such as Blu-ray movies. Although many people condemn physical formats, it seems that there is still life in this.
