Spider-Man: Brand New Day is out now: Yelena, Punisher, Hulk and Aunt May cameos revealed

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is in theaters now, and from here on out, this gets into spoilers for Tom Holland’s fourth solo Spider-Man movie. The story picks up five years after Spider-Man: No Way Home and drops Peter Parker into a harsher, more street-level New York, where no one knows who he is anymore.

By this point, four years have passed for Peter. He’s living by himself, spending his days working full time as Spider-Man, and digging into a strange new pattern in the city’s crime. At the same time, his powers are starting to shift. He’s producing organic webs, hitting harder than before, and dealing with a growing anger that scares him enough to consider a power-suppressing chip, even after Bruce Banner warns him about leaning on tech to hold those changes back.

The cameos are a real surprise, and they actually matter. Yelena Belova shows up twice in a small but useful role, bringing some comic relief, helping piece together clues, and giving the movie a clean link to the New Avengers.

Aunt May only appears in flashbacks, since she died in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and those scenes keep the movie’s sense of responsibility front and center.

Frank Castle, the Punisher, shows up as a brutal reflection of where vengeance leads.

There are smaller touches, too: Mac Gargan finally comes back as Scorpion, Pat Kiernan appears, and Naomi Watts voices Peter Parker’s new assistant, E.V.

If you’ve been waiting for a Spider-Man movie that stays close to the neighborhood level while still setting Peter Parker up for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, this one delivers. The film’s 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with its early box-office momentum, makes it look like Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures really did pull off the reset.

You can catch Spider-Man: Brand New Day in theaters now.
