HBO is moving forward with its new platform hosting its content, Max, and one of its primary objectives is to delve much deeper into the main IPs owned by Warner Bros Discovery. Specifically, the two major brands they aim to exploit are Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. While the former already has a reboot in progress, the latter will be expanded with several spin-offs.
We’ve already seen that “House of the Dragon” works perfectly, just like its predecessor, but what about the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off series? “The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is the one that’s already confirmed, but two others are in development, although they are yet to be officially confirmed: a Jon Snow sequel and a prequel about Aegon the Conqueror.
The Game of Thrones series we will never see
However, there is another prequel that is not in production but holds enormous potential: the Game of Thrones series about the rebellion of King Robert Baratheon. This is the story that sets the stage for Game of Thrones as we know it, and as we know from the series itself, everything we would see there would be truly spectacular.
From seeing the young Jaime Lannister become the Kingslayer to the last of the Targaryens, a show about this event would undoubtedly work perfectly. HBO is also keen on this idea and would like to create a series about the Rebellion. However, there’s a stumbling block: George R.R. Martin himself. His words were as follows:
“We’re not going to do Robert’s Rebellion. I know thousands of you want that, I know there’s a petition… but by the time I finish writing A Song of Ice and Fire, you’ll know everything important that happened in Robert’s Rebellion. There would be no surprises or revelations in a show like that, just the depiction of conflicts whose resolutions you already know. That’s not a story I want to tell now; it would feel like a story told twice.”
