Steam, Valve’s PC storefront, added eight more free games for the weekend. PC players can pick up a mix of mystery, horror, survival shooter, platformer, and RPG indies right now, download them on the spot, and keep them without paying anything upfront.
That lineup says something about how wide Steam’s free catalog has gotten. On Valve’s store, free games do a few jobs at once: they pull in first-time users, give regular players a reason to stick around, and bring people back even when they aren’t spending money. These new releases also look a lot more like standard free-to-play games, with optional purchases, cosmetics, passes, or expansions, than the usual free-to-keep promo where a paid game drops to $0 for a limited window and stays in your library if you claim it in time. For indie studios, that difference matters. Free releases can help a game get discovered, spread through word of mouth, catch a streamer’s eye, build wishlists, and sell add-ons. One widely cited report on the Graveyard Keeper giveaway said it brought in about $250,000 in four days, mostly from DLC.
If you already spend time digging through Steam’s free indie section, this is the kind of update that’s easy to jump on. Steam’s approach is also pretty different from the Epic Games Store model, where the weekly giveaways tend to be bigger and more visible. Supporters say Steam’s setup gives players more choice. Critics point to a few downsides: premium games can lose some of their perceived value, microtransactions can get pushy, and grey-market key resales don’t go away. Either way, all eight games are available now on Steam for PC.
