Stephen King’s Revival has officially lost its Warner Bros. movie adaptation, which puts the focus back on how much screen potential his 2014 novel still has. The book remains one of King’s most disturbing, Lovecraft-leaning stories, packed with forbidden knowledge, spiritual collapse, and a vision of life after death that’s genuinely horrible to sit with. Reports say the adaptation stalled even with Mike Flanagan involved, partly because of budget concerns and partly because the ending is just that bleak.
If Revival is ever going to work on screen, an eight-to-ten-episode limited series feels like the best fit. This story stretches across decades, and the relationship between Charles Jacobs and Jamie Morton needs space: Jacobs in his early, charismatic years, Jacobs after his crisis of faith, Jamie’s addiction and recovery, and the creeping dread of science pushing open a door that should never be touched.
And if you’ve followed Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King work, the case for that format gets even stronger. Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House, and The Midnight Club all make it clear that Flanagan knows how to handle grief, religion, addiction, mortality, emotional intimacy, and cosmic despair without losing any of the human weight.
For now, Revival is still only available as a novel, but streaming feels like the right home for it, especially if interest in The Mist and Prime Video’s 2026 UK-produced Crouch End adaptation keeps pushing Stephen King’s cosmic horror further forward.
