Did you watch the Super Bowl last night? The final between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs that took place at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale (Arizona) was one of the sporting events of the year. It was a huge success with a spectacular performance by Rihanna, who returned to the stage yesterday, and a series of commercials that didn’t come cheap.
Among the ads we were able to see last night, we found a pleasant surprise for many millennials who grew up watching ‘Super Mario Bros. Super Show’ (“The Super Mario Bros. Show”), a series aired in the early 90’s starring Shigeru Miyamoto‘s characters.
Last night, a new trailer for ‘Super Mario Bros.: The Movie’, the upcoming film based on the world’s most famous plumber, was released. The trailer pretends to be a commercial for plumbing services performed by Mario and his brother Luigi (both named Mario, for some reason) to the beat of a very special rap.
The rap that can be heard in the background is a sort of “remake” of the rap that many young people born in the 80s listened to every day while watching Super Mario Bros. Super Show. The rap was part of the opening of this animated series that also included some scenes with flesh and blood actors, including WWE star Lou Albano and comedian Danny Wells, in the purest 90s sitcom style.
The trailer, which has no waste at all, shows at the end a phone that users can call (and which is perfectly functional), as well as a web page, which “simulates” offering plumbing services (you can even see a “seen on TV”). For gamers, the website also includes a small “easter egg”: if you click on “Call or Text Us At 929-55-MARIO”, the melody that will sound is the same that could be heard when turning on the legendary Nintendo Game Cube console.
Super Mario Bros.: The Movie will be released in theaters on March 31, and will feature an all-star cast in its original version, including Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, Seth Rogen and Charlie Day.
