The first trailer for the new science fiction series titled The Boroughs has been released and has captured the attention of genre fans, evoking the feeling of Stranger Things but aimed at a more mature audience. This new proposal, which will premiere on Netflix on May 21, features a notable cast including Alfred Molina, Jena Malone, Denis O’Hare, Alfre Woodard, Geena Davis, and Bill Pullman.
An idyllic community threatened by something strange
The Boroughs takes place in an idyllic retirement community, where the character Sam, played by Molina, arrives with the expectation of enjoying his time. However, what seems to be a perfect environment hides surprising alien activities. Along with other residents, such as Wally (OHare), Judy (Woodard), and Renee (Davis), the group of unlikely heroes is forced to confront a supernatural threat that jeopardizes their time and well-being.
The trailer suggests a mix of mystery and excitement, showing the characters arming themselves with knives, weapons, and bats to explore the secrets of their community. The premise is marked by an intriguing tagline: “In an apparently picturesque retirement community, an unlikely group of heroes must come together to stop a threat from another world that seeks to steal what little they have… time.”
The Boroughs is created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, known for their work on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and produced by the Duffer brothers under their Upside Down Pictures banner. The series is inspired by the movie Cocoon, a classic from 1985 directed by Ron Howard, which also explored supernatural themes in a community of elderly people. With production promising to maintain the same tone as previous works by the Duffer brothers, expectations are high for this sophisticated science fiction tale.
