Temple Run has been downloaded over one billion times

Temple Run has been downloaded over a billion times, according to developer Imangi. The figure includes all platforms, the original Temple Run, and its sequel Temple Run 2.

Not many games ever reach that figure, although Rovio’s Angry Birds series has been downloaded over two billion times. Temple Run’s billion downloads also do not include its Disney tie-in games.

Imangi also revealed some interesting statistics about Temple Run players: 60% are women, and China has 36% of all downloads, with the US coming in second at 21%.

Temple Run was released in 2011, with its sequel appearing two years later. Like Angry Birds, its success is built on it’s simple controls and a good upgrade system that keeps you coming back.

St Patrick’s day update out now for Temple Run 2

Temple Run 2 is getting a special St. Patrick’s day update on Android and iOS. The massively popular endless runner game now comes equipped with a green hat you can put on any character, and five St Patrick’s day artifacts can be found scattered among the game.

The artifacts are hidden in chests, placed randomly along the runs. Developer Imangi Studios has not announced what the artifacts are, and there are no new levels in this update, version 1.8. This isn’t the first time Temple Run has been updated with a hat and artifacts: last month there was a Valentine’s update, and in December 2013 you could play as Santa Clause for a limited time, as well as use a Christmas hat on your other characters.

Temple Run 2 is a free download for iOS and Android, and has optional in-game purchases.

The best Temple Run clones

With over 100 million downloads, Temple Run is one of the most successful games on Android and iOS. The game’s awesome popularity has lead to a follow-up version, Temple Run 2, and two Disney offshoots, Temple Run: Oz and Temple Run: Brave. Hoping for a piece of the Temple Run pie, though, loads of other developers have hopped on the endless running bandwagon.

Even though the basic premise is the same, many of these games still manage to be both original and witty. Most are also free, but operate on the freemium concept – play is free, but if you want to go faster and last longer, you better get your wallet out!

Temple Run 2 coming out soon

Temple Run 2 will soon be released on the US App Store, after appearing in New Zealand this morning. The original was one of our favorite mobile games, earning an impressive 9/10, and was one of the biggest hits of 2012.

Temple Run 2 looks much better than than its predecessor, and swaps the 90% corners for more realistic twists and turns, and more variety along the way. The basic gameplay looks unchanged though – it’s still an endless runner, and control is via well timed swipes as you progress.
