It has been 20 years since the release of ‘Code Geass’, an anime that revolutionized the genre with its anti-colonial approach, philosophical reflections, and high-quality animation. Celebrating this significant anniversary, new projects have been announced that aim to expand the universe of the franchise. The sequel series ‘Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture’ premiered in 2024 and is set several years after the original story.

Expanding the franchise

The new installment will be directed by Kazuya Nomura, known for his work on ‘Heavenly Delusions’ and ‘Moriarty the Patriot’, while the main script will be handled by Mado Nozaki. A first look at the new characters has been revealed, showing a change in artistic style compared to previous installments. Sunrise, the studio behind the series, seems to be betting on a new narrative approach, moving away from Lelouch as the central protagonist.

While the series seems to overshadow Lelouch’s legacy, the character will not be completely absent from the ‘Code Geass’ landscape. The hero of the series will make a return, but in a different format: a musical titled ‘Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion – Seido ni Jyunzuru Kishi 2’.

As the franchise moves into the future, we wonder how these new characters will be integrated and what new themes ‘Code Geass’ will explore. Through this evolution, fans are getting ready to embark on a new adventure that, while leaving behind some of the most iconic characters, promises to maintain the challenging spirit that made the anime famous at its debut.
