Disney set a condition to make the Blade movie: that he be white

The movie Blade, starring Wesley Snipes, has not only earned a special place in the hearts of fans but also played a crucial role in saving Marvel from bankruptcy in the late 90s. This film marked the beginning of a new era not only for Marvel Studios but for superhero cinema in general. Before its release, studios were hesitant about whether their approach should include African American characters in leading roles.

A character whose identity is defined by being black

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, David S. Goyer, the screenwriter of Blade, revealed that New Line Cinema, the co-producer of the film, wanted both Blade and his mentor, Jamal Afari, to be portrayed as white characters. Goyer strongly opposed this idea, arguing that it would be a significant mistake to strip the characters of their essence and legacy. According to his words, “at one point, the studio came to us and asked: ‘Can Blade be white?’. And I said: ‘Not at all. That’s terrible. They can’t do that.’“

This firm defense of the identity of African American characters is a testament to the paradigm shift that was occurring in the realm of comics and film. Before the consecration of Blade, other figures like Black Panther and Luke Cage had been considered for film adaptations, demonstrating a growing interest in diversifying the Marvel universe. However, it was Blade who ultimately broke the ice, paving the way for future productions that integrate characters of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds.

Thus, Blade is not only remembered as a cult masterpiece, but as the film that laid the groundwork for the success that would follow for Marvel Studios and the exquisite cinematic universe we know today.

The Blade movie continues to go through a complex and problematic production, marked by the constant rotation of writers and directors involved. Originally announced in 2019, the project has seen several talents come and go, including Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange, which has contributed to its creative instability. Blade was removed from Marvel’s release schedule, leaving fans with more questions than answers.

A disappointment that has been explicitly expressed

David S. Goyer, screenwriter of the original Blade trilogy, has expressed his confusion regarding the production difficulties of the new film. In a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Goyer emphasized that the story of Blade should be “relatively simple” and action-packed. According to him, the promising return of the character should include “a lot of kicks and a tone that could be R-rated.” However, he has admitted to feeling “perplexed” by the problems the project has faced in its development.

Despite the setbacks, Marvel remains committed to producing a new Blade movie. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, noted that the priority is to create a story that lives up to the previous films, suggesting that they do not want to rush and risk releasing a lower quality product. In the writing process, Eric Pearson has been the latest to join as a screenwriter following the departure of Yann Demange.

On the other hand, Wesley Snipes, who played Blade in the previous films, has hinted at his return to the character, emphasizing that “there has only been one Blade and there will always be only one like him.” His recent appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine has reignited interest in the iconic vampire hunter, leaving fans divided between nostalgia and anticipation for the new.

David S. Goyer, a recognized screenwriter behind major franchises like Blade and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, has shared interesting reflections on his career and his relationship with the DC cinematic universe. In a recent episode of the podcast Happy Sad Confused, Goyer recalled Nolan’s advice to avoid getting involved in projects following his famous trilogy, suggesting that the new DC narrative has been confusing from the start.

A cinematic universe with serious narrative problems

After the released Justice League, the DC Universe faced serious narrative cohesion problems. Although Goyer and his colleague Justin Rhodes were hired to develop a movie about Green Lantern, titled Green Lantern Corps, the project did not materialize. Currently, under the direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the focus has been reoriented with the announcement of a series called Lanterns for HBO, which replaces the movie that Goyer was going to write.

Over the years, Goyer has been a key player in the evolution of superheroes on the big screen, co-writing scripts for successful films like Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, the future of the DC cinematic universe seems to be taking a turn under Gunn’s influence, who has stated that his priority is to finish the scripts for the upcoming Batman and Wonder Woman movies, two fundamental characters of the franchise.

In this context, Robert Pattinson has established himself as the only active Batman after debuting in The Batman in 2022, with plans to continue his story in The Batman 2. Gunn’s goal is to introduce other key characters from the DC universe, starting with the highly anticipated return of Superman on July 11.
