This 2025 marks the tenth anniversary of Cities: Skylines, a significant milestone for a game that revitalized the city-building genre after the failure of SimCity in 2013. Paradox Interactive and Colossal Order have decided to commemorate this occasion with a series of updates, gifts, and new releases for both titles.
A lot of new content, at least part of it is free
The anniversary patches will include a variety of free parks and buildings in Cities: Skylines 2, themed specifically for the celebration, while the first installment will offer dynamic parks that will change based on the user’s expansions. Additionally, players who own the Ultimate Edition of Cities: Skylines 2 will have free access to creator packs and radio stations, while others will be able to purchase them individually or as part of a bundle.
Likewise, Paradox’s subscription service will expand on March 13, allowing subscribers to access all additional content for a monthly fee. Those who already own some DLC will receive a special offer to complete their collection. This move comes at a crucial time, as Cities: Skylines faced severe criticism following its 2023 release due to stability and optimization issues in its sequel. The lack of modding tools was particularly disappointing for the community, which had been instrumental in the success of the first title.
Colossal Order has acknowledged that the development of an asset editor for the sequel has encountered more complex technical obstacles than expected, leading to frustration among players. Despite the difficulties, the celebration of the tenth anniversary is a reminder of the lasting impact of Cities: Skylines on the genre and the expectations for its continuation.
