The highly anticipated continuation of the Grand Theft Auto saga, GTA VI, has an official release date: November 19, 2026, specifically for the PS5 and Xbox Series platforms. This announcement comes at a time when GTA V, which has dominated the industry since its release in 2013, will be 12 years old. This prolonged life of the game has been a testament to both its successful design and the mark it has left on popular culture.
GTAVI does not have its main developer because it is overwhelming
However, the landscape at Rockstar, the developer behind this iconic franchise, has changed significantly in recent years. One of the most notable events was the resignation of Dan Houser, co-founder and lead writer of the saga, in 2020. In a recent interview, Houser shared that the immense scale and complexity of the projects that Rockstar undertook, such as GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, made his experience working there become an overwhelming challenge. “Completing things at that scale, with so many moving parts, takes a lot of time and is a difficult process,” he commented.
Despite the recent layoffs and the internal crisis at Rockstar, Houser maintains that the video game industry is, overall, a positive environment. He acknowledged that, while not all companies are perfect, most experiences in the industry are supportive. “Fundamentally, yes, it is a good work environment for most of the time,” he stated.
Regarding the role of artificial intelligence in video game creation, Houser expressed his confidence that quality writing will continue to be dominated by humans. Despite technological advancements, creativity in narrative development will remain a fundamental aspect that, in his opinion, will not be easily replaced by AI.
