No one expected much from ‘Helldivers 2.’ The reality is that it is one of the most successful games of the year and for good reasons. Artistically impeccable and mechanically outstanding, there is an important reason not to give up on the game no matter how much time passes: its narrative. Its developers are managing to tell a thrilling story in which players are an active part. And it may have taken a major twist.
From Super Earth, over the weekend, a new order was sent to all helldivers. They had to descend onto Meridia to eliminate a super colony of termenids that were ravaging the planet. Something particularly urgent, given that this planet was once a peaceful swampy planet.
The reality of the descent in Meridia was much more terrible than expected. In addition to a massive amount of termenids, the aliens created spore towers all over the planet, which could be glimpsed in the distance. Being a secondary target for the bravest. With nests everywhere and termenids appearing non-stop, it seemed like the mission couldn’t escalate any further. Except that at the end of the mission, flying termenids relentlessly harassed the helldivers until they died or managed to escape. A Pyrrhic victory, if it can even be considered a victory.
All of this is a consequence of a previous order from Super Earth. After the helldivers launched thermicide on numerous planets, the termite hordes adapted. Mutating into grotesque forms, this thermicide was what allowed the termites to create the super colony of Meridia. Which no amount of helldivers managed to annihilate.
But this was not a liberation mission, but a destruction one. Thanks to the acts of the helldivers, they managed to release enough dark fluid to generate a black hole that completely devoured the planet of Meridia. Ending the termite spores billions of kilometers around it. Something that has had two consequences. The amount of termites has drastically decreased in nearby galaxies and the terrifying certainty that nothing is over.
The black hole that has formed where Meridia was has been the result of the dark fluid. A synthetic chemical component created by The Enlightened, the third alien faction of the first Helldivers. This has opened the door to numerous theories from players. Whether they can attract the attention of this civilization by using their own weapons, or whether the black hole is actually a wormhole that has sent millions of bugs in their direction, something seems clear. The Enlightened are there. And they are much more dangerous than any number of bugs and automatons.
