Minghella has confirmed that the film will fully embrace the elements of body horror, a hallmark of the character’s roots in the comics. In statements to Collider, he expressed his excitement stating that “it’s a proper movie” with “a really fantastic script.”

Before The Batman 2, a villain is coming

Director James Watkins, known for his work on Eden Lake, seems to be an appropriate choice for this project due to his experience in the horror genre. Minghella praised Watkins’ skill, noting that his extensive career in film fits perfectly with the movie they are creating. “I can’t imagine anyone else doing it,” Minghella added about the director.

The Clayface movie will also feature Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, the second version of Clayface in the comics. This character has the ability to shapeshift and transform into sentient mud, although this ability comes with the loss of his humanity. Set images seem to indicate that Harries will undergo a tough physical transformation that reflects these dramatic changes in his character.

In addition, speculation has arisen that Basil Karlo, the first version of Clayface, could appear in The Batman 2. Actress Carmen Ejogo, who played Eve Karlo in The Penguin, could be connected to this possible appearance. Despite the visual similarities in the sets, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has downplayed the potential connections between Clayface and The Batman 2, stating that both will belong to different narrative universes.

Clayface is scheduled to premiere on September 11, 2026, and fans are eagerly anticipating what promises to be an intriguing and innovative adaptation of the source material.

The next movie of a beloved DC villain could be the link to the sequel of The Batman

The upcoming Clayface movie could have some interesting connections to the universe of The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves. Recently, set images were leaked from the streets of Liverpool, where the lead actor, Tom Rhys Harries, can be seen portraying Matt Hagen, known as Clayface. Additionally, actor Max Minghella, known for his role in The Handmaid’s Tale, has been spotted as a detective from Gotham City.

A movie with a more than obvious nod

A notable reference in the set is the motto Sic Parvis Magna, which means “Greatness comes from small beginnings,” and which had already been used in The Batman. This inclusion has generated speculation among DC fans, who hope that the worlds of Clayface and The Batman will merge in the future. However, the head of DC Studios, James Gunn, has stated on several occasions that this will not happen, leaving fans divided in their expectations.

The use of the motto Sic Parvis Magna has also been mentioned in the popular video games of the Arkham series, suggesting that its appearance in the Clayface movie could simply be an Easter egg for fans of the Batman universe. However, many fans are eager to see a broader connection between the various narratives of the DC Extended Universe and the alternative stories presented by Reeves.

Clayface is scheduled to premiere in theaters on September 11, 2026, following the release of Supergirl on June 26 of that same year. Additionally, fans can expect two more Batman movies, The Batman 2 and The Brave and the Bold, which ensures that there will be different versions of the iconic superhero on the horizon.
