Mel Gibson has begun filming the long-awaited sequel to The Passion of the Christ, titled The Resurrection of Christ. This new project will be divided into two parts: the first will premiere on March 26, 2027, coinciding with Good Friday, while the second part is scheduled for May 6, 2027, Ascension Day. Both dates place the narrative in the religious context surrounding the central events of the film.

The filming takes place in the iconic Cinecittà studios in Rome, where Gibson also made the first installment of this story that became a global phenomenon and one of the highest-grossing independent productions of all time. This time, Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will replace Jim Caviezel in the role of Jesus, leading a completely new cast that includes Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene, Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate, and Rupert Everett in a supporting role.
Gibson has described The Resurrection of Christ as a visually extreme and emotionally deep narrative that will focus on the three days following the crucifixion. The film promises to explore the spiritual mystery of the resurrection, adopting an experimental and symbolic approach. Additionally, the use of Aramaic, Hebrew, and Latin will be maintained, lines that continue the linguistic ambition of its predecessor.
The filming will also move to different historical sites in southern Italy, such as Matera and Gravina Laterza, which will enrich the visual and mystical atmosphere that the director intends to convey. With this sequel, Gibson aims to continue the legacy of one of the most controversial films of the 21st century, generating both interest and controversy among audiences and critics.
