The highly anticipated update for World of Warcraft, set to be released on January 21, will bring one of the most significant changes in the game’s history by limiting the functionality of addons in combat. This change, part of Blizzard’s strategy to improve user experience, aims to make addons optional, rather than essential for satisfactory gameplay.
A WoW without addons
For more than two decades, players have relied on various tools and addons that provided crucial information in battles. However, with the new patch, Blizzard aims to restrict their ability to automate actions and provide data that is not found in the new game interface. According to the company, this will not only make addons more balanced but also aims to eradicate excessive automation that often harms the gaming experience.
The modification of these addons may cause temporary issues, as some of them will stop working due to the changes in the policies that Blizzard had already anticipated. Despite these possible initial inconveniences, it is expected that addon developers will grow and adapt to the new demands, ensuring that the evolutionary process does not become a long-term obstacle.
Ion Hazzikostas, game director, emphasized that the intention is for the answer to the question “Do you need to use addons to play?” to become a simple “no.” This move follows the example of Riot Games, which at one point removed addons from League of Legends, resulting in positive acceptance from its community.
Finally, it is worth noting that Blizzard will only focus on addons related to combat, allowing aesthetic and accessibility modifications to remain unrestricted. This ensures that players can still enjoy visual customizations without the limitations imposed on combat tools.
