The developer Long Jaunt has released a significant update called A Damn Big Update for their medieval colony simulator, Norland. This new version deeply restructures the core mechanics of the game, aiming to enhance the player experience. The update is currently available in the beta branch, but it is expected to be released for the final version very soon.
Objective: improve the gaming experience
One of the most notable changes in this update is the modification in the way tasks are assigned within the colony. Previously, several lords were responsible for different sectors, which increased the need for micromanagement. Now, a single lord will be in charge of issuing orders to all the servants, thus simplifying the gameplay dynamic and allowing players to focus on more strategic aspects.
Additionally, the update removes the needs tab for characters and focuses on their desires, making it easier to manage the thoughts of elite characters. Long Jaunt has stated that this is because social factors have a more significant impact on these characters than their physiological needs, which are no longer a constant concern given their privileged position.
The mood of the colony will also influence the migration of new inhabitants; a positive environment will attract more people, while a negative environment will cause villagers to leave the colony. The execution of penalties has been automated, thus eliminating the need for a morning sermon, allowing villagers to be more productive. On the other hand, changes in diplomacy mechanics will allow players to make more intriguing treaties and political manipulations.
The proposed changes seem to address several criticisms that Norland received during its early access phase, suggested by the community. With this update, Long Jaunt aims not only to retain its current players but also to attract new fans of the simulation genre.
