Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, recently addressed the role that artificial intelligence (AI) can play in the creative process of video games, suggesting that this technology does not pose a threat to artists but rather an opportunity to elevate their work. During a panel at Semafor World Economy 2026, Zelnick expressed confidence that AI can help developers focus on more complex and creative tasks by taking on automated work. “Technology generates productivity, which creates more jobs,” he stated, questioning the idea that AI could lead to unemployment in the industry.
AI Will Go Against CEOs
The CEO cited Elon Musk as an example that AI has not replaced jobs, indicating that if it were a real threat, the billionaire would have been affected in his work. Zelnick emphasized that AI should be seen as a “heavyweight” that lightens the load of mundane tasks, allowing artists to focus on more exciting creative aspects.
A notable change in artistic production is observed in the autonomy that AI tools are providing to developers. Zelnick compared the past, where creating grass in a video game required meticulous attention from an artist, with the current reality where AI can generate these elements almost instantly. This transformation could enhance the quality of creative work, but it also raises questions about the future of artistic creation and the risk of AI imposing a standardized approach to design.
Despite concerns about the massive use of generative models, Zelnick expressed confidence that the human and creative approach will continue to prevail. “Creators will need to continue producing something that is oriented towards innovation,” he concluded, holding onto the hope that the collaboration between humans and AI will foster a more dynamic environment in the video game industry.
