The latest Jason Bourne movie was released in 2016, and while some may think the franchise has fallen into oblivion, fans of the saga starring Matt Damon keep its memory alive. Starting in early 2025, the film rights to the series will return to the heirs of Robert Ludlum, creator of the novels that inspire the movies, which has triggered intense competition among production companies and streaming platforms to acquire the license.
A movie worth revisiting
Recently, Universal Pictures, responsible for the previous five installments, managed to regain the rights, matching offers from other studios. Peter Cramer, president of Universal, expressed his desire to collaborate with Jeffrey Weiner, executor of Ludlum, to expand the saga across various platforms. “We look forward to collaborating with the Universal team to expand the Bourne franchise,” Weiner stated.
The interest in the franchise is undeniable, especially considering that the four original Bourne films, starring Matt Damon, grossed a total of $1.3 billion worldwide. However, the television series Treadstone, which premiered in 2019, did not have the same luck and was canceled after one season, receiving mixed reviews regarding its narrative and cohesion despite having a good dose of action.
As Universal Pictures prepares to define the next steps in the legacy of Jason Bourne, speculation remains about which direction the franchise will take. While no future projects have been officially announced, the possibility of new content has renewed hope among fans of one of the most iconic characters in action cinema.
