Sigourney Weaver adding a touch of distinction

Recently, rumors have emerged about the possibility of the legendary actress Sigourney Weaver joining the cast. According to information from Deadline, Weaver is considering a role in the television adaptation, although no agreement has been finalized yet and the nature of her character remains a mystery.

The series will be written and executive produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for her acclaimed creation Fleabag. This team, which includes Story Kitchen, which has also worked on an animated Tomb Raider series for Netflix, suggests a revitalized and conceptually solid approach to the franchise.

In addition to Turner, British actor Martin Bobb-Semple is also linked to the project as a regular in the series, although his role in the plot has not yet been confirmed. The variety of talents involved in this project promises to offer a unique experience that could attract both fans of the video game series and new viewers.

Tomb Raider fans should also keep an eye on The Game Awards, which will take place on December 11, where an announcement related to the franchise is anticipated, which will offer “a look at the future of one of the most iconic franchises in the world of video games,” according to Geoff Keighley. This presentation could provide more details about the direction the series will take.

Tomb Raider unexpectedly announces two big news items, although neither is its new video game

Fans of the Tomb Raider saga have been eagerly awaiting news about the upcoming video game following the conclusion of the modern trilogy with Shadow of the Tomb Raider. With the silence surrounding this anticipated release, Crystal Dynamics continues to work on the new title, which will be published by Amazon. As the gaming community awaits more information, two pieces of news have emerged to keep the interest alive.

Tomb Raider returns, but not yet in full force

Square Enix and Aspyr have simultaneously released Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch consoles, which has taken many by surprise. This title is based on the 2014 remaster and not only includes the full campaign but also six additional outfits for Lara, eight maps for multiplayer mode, and characters for online play. Those who purchase the game on the eShop will receive extra content, such as the comic Tomb Raider: The Beginning and a mini art book. Its regular price is 20 euros, but it is currently offered at a reduced price of 17.99 euros for those who already own other Tomb Raider titles on Switch.

In terms of performance, the version for the newly released Nintendo Switch 2 reaches 60 fps with an improved resolution, compared to the stable 30 fps of the original Switch. Additionally, features such as gyroscopic control and touchscreen support have been incorporated. With this, it is speculated that other titles like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider could come to both consoles in the future.

On the other hand, Netflix has revealed the trailer for Season 2 of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which premieres on December 11, 2026. This animated series, which continues the events after the modern trilogy, will be the last season. It has also been confirmed that Sophie Turner will play Lara Croft in an upcoming live-action series for Amazon Prime Video, written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with filming scheduled to begin next year.

After six years of development, the Tomb Raider series by Phoebe Waller-Bridge has been canceled

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, recognized for her work in acclaimed series such as Fleabag and Killing Eve, as well as for her screenplay in the James Bond film No Time to Die, has seen one of her most anticipated projects fall through. The live-action Tomb Raider series, which promised to be a milestone in her career, has been canceled after six years of development without achieving a final script. This leaves us without knowing what perspective one of the most interesting voices in the landscape would have brought.

A look at a mythical video game character that we wanted to explore

Despite Waller-Bridge’s status as one of the most influential creative minds in Hollywood, with an exclusive contract with Prime Video worth 20 million dollars annually, her relationship with the streaming platform has not produced tangible results in three years. According to reports from GamesRadar, the ambitious Tomb Raider project has gone through multiple writers’ rooms and has consumed millions of dollars in expenses, with no final product that meets the producers’ expectations.

The news is particularly shocking considering that, in the initial reports, the project generated great enthusiasm. Waller-Bridge had been selected in 2019 to develop the script, with Jennifer Salke overseeing it. However, the final result has been discouraging, leading to the cancellation of the project that was once considered a sure source of revenue and audience for Prime Video.

In contrast, the animated series of Tomb Raider produced by Netflix has had a completely different journey. This series has been renewed for a second season following the success of its first installment, standing out for Hayley Atwell’s performance in the lead role. This contrast highlights the volatility of content development in the entertainment industry, where talent does not always guarantee success.
