Fede Álvarez, the director known for his work in the radical revival of horror with Evil Dead, will not take on the direction of the sequel to Alien: Romulus. Despite this, he has expressed his intention to write it. In a recent appearance at the HorrorHound Film Festival in Cincinnati, Álvarez commented on his respect for the directors who have preceded him in the franchise, mentioning James Cameron and David Fincher as influences on his approach. According to Álvarez, “it’s one of those things where you come in and do one” in the Alien series.
Give way to another director
Together with his writing partner, Rodo Sayagues, Álvarez has emphasized his desire to keep the characters they created safe in the story, especially after the premature deaths of figures like Hicks and Newt in previous installments. “We did what was necessary to ensure they aren’t killed at the beginning of the next one,” he added, expressing his appreciation for the characters and their importance in the narrative.
Alien: Romulus, starring Isabela Merced, Eileen Wu, Archie Renaux, David Jonsson, and Cailee Spaeny from ‘Priscilla’, is set 57 years after the original from 1979. The plot follows Rain Carradine and her synthetic brother, Andy, as they lead a group of young volunteers on an exploration mission that turns dark when they encounter a terrifying lifeform.
The sequel was officially announced in October 2024, with the confirmation that Álvarez would not direct the film in September 2025. Fans of the saga eagerly hope that the legacy of Alien remains alive, as the cinematic universe expands with new stories and characters.
