Tesla’s Sales in Germany Plummet 76% as Electric Vehicle Demand Declines

Tesla’s sales in Europe have taken a staggering hit, particularly in Germany, where deliveries plunged 76% in February compared to the same month last year.

The electric vehicle manufacturer managed to deliver only 1,429 vehicles in Germany this February, down from over 6,000 in February 2024.

This sharp decline represents a broader trend, with total deliveries in Germany down 70% for the year, marking a significant challenge for Tesla in its largest European market.

Total deliveries in Germany down 70% for the year

Reports from other European nations such as France, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden echo the same troubling theme; Tesla’s sales have dropped considerably across the continent.

While there was a slight uptick in Spain, where deliveries showed a 7% increase compared to January, the overall picture remains bleak. Year-to-date figures show that Tesla’s sales in Spain are still down 44% compared to 2024, highlighting erosion in consumer demand.

Analysts suggest that the decline in sales is not merely a transitional phase linked to the rollout of the Model Y. Despite expectations that demand would remain stable during this changeover, sales for the Model 3 have also seen significant declines—down 40% in Germany and an alarming 60% in France.

— DW News (@dwnews) March 5, 2025

Such figures indicate that Tesla’s issues in these markets are more profound than a temporary adjustment period for new models.

Globally, this decline is part of a concerning trend as Tesla reported its first annual sales drop in a decade last year, and early indicators suggest that 2025 may worsen if current patterns persist.

While UK sales improved by 7% in February after an 18% decline in January, the net effect of decreased sales in key European markets could spell trouble ahead for the electric car pioneer.

Production Woes Continue as Tesla Struggles with Cybertruck Demand

Production Woes Continue as Tesla Struggles with Cybertruck Demand

Tesla is now offering discounted financing rates for its highly anticipated Cybertruck, with a limited-time 1.99% APR for well-qualified buyers.

This is significantly lower than the usual rate of 5.84%, hinting at the company’s efforts to boost sluggish sales of its electric pickup truck, which has faced challenges since its announcement.

Despite over 1 million reservations, production of the Cybertruck has fallen short of expectations, with estimates suggesting only 40,000 units will be sold this year—less than 10% of CEO Elon Musk’s ambitious goal of 500,000 units annually.

— Cybertruck (@cybertruck) March 6, 2025

The company is offering financing rates as low as 0% and 0.99%.

This disappointing performance comes even as Tesla reports positive sales for its Model 3, where the company is offering financing rates as low as 0% and 0.99%.

The Cybertruck has been in production for over a year and a half, but recent adjustments have revealed that the final version is more expensive and has a shorter range than initially promised. In response, Tesla has implemented various strategies to drive sales, such as offering leases and even providing free Supercharging for the “Foundations Series” of Cybertrucks. However, these efforts still raise concerns about the vehicle’s overall viability.

Recent insights indicate that even the introduction of a cheaper single-motor Cybertruck may not significantly enhance sales; analysts predict it might only bring Tesla closer to achieving 20-30% of the initial sales projections. Rumors suggest that unless there are substantial changes, the Cybertruck could face further challenges in capturing consumer interest.

As Tesla pivots its production strategy to include regular Cybertrucks, stakeholders remain skeptical about the vehicle’s future success, especially given the lackluster sales thus far. The company’s initiatives indicate an urgent need to revitalize the Cybertruck’s market presence, raising questions about its long-term viability in an increasingly competitive electric vehicle sector.

Xiaomi has just beaten Tesla on its own turf

The Xiaomi SU7 has recently surpassed the sales of the Tesla Model 3 in China, a significant milestone in the competitive electric vehicle (EV) market. In January, Xiaomi reported the delivery of more than 22,000 of its SU7, compared to 8,000 units of the Model 3. This success is largely due to a base price that is approximately $2,500 lower than that of the Model 3, as well as a larger battery that offers 10% more range and advanced technological features, such as a heads-up display and a mini refrigerator. Xiaomi has proven to be a formidable competitor, producing a total of 70,000 SU7 in the first six months of production, thus surpassing Tesla in units manufactured.

For the first time, total sales of the Xiaomi SU7 have surpassed Tesla's Model 3 in China since deliveries began in April 2024.

• Xiaomi SU7: 162,384

— Troy Teslike (@TroyTeslike) February 15, 2025

Xiaomi is selling more than ever despite its long wait times

Despite the growing demand, the wait times for the SU7 are considerably longer, with periods of 31 to 34 weeks, while Model 3 buyers can receive their vehicle in just 1 to 3 weeks.

Both vehicles use advanced manufacturing technologies. The SU7 employs ‘hypercasting’ and a ‘structural battery pack’, drawing inspiration from Tesla’s methods. However, these advancements have not yet been incorporated into the Model 3, which could give Xiaomi a competitive edge in the future.

As Tesla faces fierce competition from local manufacturers, its position as a luxury brand in China has been eroded. To tackle the challenge, the company has announced plans to launch more affordable models in the second half of the year, although this could result in the cannibalization of its own products.

With the production of the YU7, designed to compete with the Model Y, scheduled to begin this summer, Xiaomi’s trajectory in the electric vehicle industry suggests that it may be closer to fulfilling the “Tesla killer” prophecy than many thought.

This significant percentage of supply exposes the California-based company to the 25% tariffs imposed by the administration of Donald Trump, despite the misconceptions of some brand fans who claim that the company will not be affected by these trade measures.

And it is possible that this serious setback for Tesla is the reason why the White House has decided to delay the implementation of these tariffs, with a one-month moratorium specifically aimed at the automotive industry (and Elon Musk is Trump’s right-hand man, which is curious).

Tesla gets more than 20% of its parts from Mexico, yes it will be affected by tariffs https://t.co/UVSgDY7m2o by @fredericlambert

— Electrek.co (@ElectrekCo) March 5, 2025

Tesla is the main victim in this entire trade war

The situation reflects the instability in current trade policy and the lack of clarity on how tariffs affect companies in the sector. In response to this uncertainty, Tesla’s shares experienced a 2% increase, suggesting a positive market reaction to the news of the new delay.

Although some enthusiasts believe that the relationship between Elon Musk and Trump means that tariffs will not impact Tesla, this assumption is incorrect. Musk has been criticized for not directly confronting trade policies, which some interpret as a lack of concern for the company’s well-being in the face of potential cost increases.

In fact, if tariffs are implemented in the future, Tesla vehicle prices are expected to rise, affecting the brand’s perception among both consumers and other manufacturers in the industry.

In conclusion, while tariffs are constantly changing, their potential impact on the automotive industry could lead to a reconsideration by Canadian and Mexican buyers and traders when doing business with the United States, an effect that could transcend beyond the duration of the tariffs themselves.

Trump's tariffs force Tesla to move

Tesla has announced the construction of a new Megafactory in Texas, near Houston, after reaching a tax exemption agreement with Waller County. This agreement, which was confirmed by the county’s Commissioners Court, involves a significant investment in facility and manufacturing equipment improvements, totaling $194 million, broken down into $44 million for facility upgrades and $150 million for manufacturing equipment. The Megafactory will occupy a huge building in the Empire West industrial park, which was previously leased by the logistics company DB Schenker.

This company handled parts for Tesla in the same space, but will withdraw to make way for the new Megapack production facility, energy storage devices developed by Tesla.

In addition, the construction of a new distribution facility valued at $31 million is planned. This part of the project will include about $2 million for distribution equipment and improvements to the building. This development is expected to generate around 1,500 new jobs in the region, thus increasing Tesla’s presence in the energy sector in Texas.

Although Tesla’s energy business growth has been remarkable, last year prices and margins faced a decline.

Tesla already operates Megapack factories in Lathrop, California, and in Shanghai, China, each with a production capacity of 40 GWh per year. However, it has not yet been clarified whether the new Megafactory in Texas will have a similar production capacity.

Punish Elon Musk for laughing at them?

“We are going to go after the interested Americans who import to the White House,” declared Freeland, thus seeking to strengthen Canada’s position in this trade dispute. And let’s not forget that Elon Musk stated that Canada is not even a real country.

The proposal has generated mixed reactions. But overall, people in Canada support the proposal, reflecting discontent with the trade policies of the United States. In fact, Canada has already taken actions similar to those of the United States, imposing tariffs on American electric vehicles following the start of the trade dispute.

Canada has a minimal production of electric vehicles (EV) and much of the current supply comes from the United States. With the new 25% tariff on those vehicles, Freeland’s proposal suggests opening the Canadian market to EVs of Chinese origin.

This could diversify the availability of vehicles within the country and facilitate the transition to emission-free transportation, especially in a context where it is expected that the demand for electric vehicles may slow down due to changes in government incentives.

While the measure could benefit competition, it is speculated that Tesla could leverage its production capacity in China to evade certain tariffs, although the manufacturer would still face tough competition from other established Chinese brands in the market.

Ultimately, Canada’s decision not only seeks to protect its economic interests but also to redefine its trade relationship with the United States and explore new opportunities in the global electric vehicle market.

The brand is going through its worst moment and they don’t know how to sell

Buyers who qualify for the federal tax credit for electric vehicles can benefit from a down payment of $0 and an interest rate of 0.99% APR for 60 months, by applying the $7,500 tax credit at the point of sale. However, not all applicants will qualify for this promotion, which is subject to change or termination at any time.

Regarding the Model Y, Tesla is only taking orders for the ‘Launch Edition’ of the new version, which is scheduled for delivery this weekend.

In addition, the manufacturer will continue to accept orders for the previous version at a reduced price, indicating that, despite the transition, there is still a significant inventory of older models, which could be a factor to consider if additional discounts are implemented throughout the quarter.

The current situation of Tesla suggests that this quarter could be challenging. Seasonal weakness in demand, combined with the challenges associated with the new design of the Model Y and the brand perception affected by Musk, could pressure the company to adopt more incentives and discounts as the end of the quarter approaches.

However, this statement has not had the expected impact on the market, as Tesla (TSLA) shares have fallen by 10% since Musk’s attempt to boost the company’s value.

Despite the CEO’s faith in Tesla’s future, several analysts have pointed out that his vision seems disconnected from the company’s current reality. Tesla’s shares are trading at a price 150 times its earnings, which already assumes significant growth of about ten times in the coming years.

It will require outstanding execution, but I think more like 1000% gain for Tesla in 5 years is possible https://t.co/s6RjBvFN3G

Tesla is close to losing half of its value in less than two months

With a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 15, market expectations seem demanding. Musk, by suggesting that “exceptional execution” is needed to achieve 1000% growth, may be underestimating the complexities Tesla is facing at this moment.

Additionally, the company is facing protests and boycotts that have affected its demand, further complicating its situation. Many Tesla supporters have placed their hopes in the recent update of the Model Y, believing that this model could reverse the negative trend and lead the company back to a path of growth. However, skepticism persists regarding this possibility.

Fleeing the ship before it sinks

This is partly because when he himself “negotiated” a compensation package of $55 billion with the board, they also granted themselves an exorbitant compensation, which they ultimately had to partially return to the company after shareholders sued them for excessive compensation.

Despite Musk threatening shareholders to gain more control over Tesla and resorting to channeling resources, the board, including Denholm, has remained silent.

The president has received hundreds of thousands of discounted Tesla shares through stock options as part of the aforementioned “excessive board compensation,” and has been selling them as soon as she is allowed.

Last month, he sold Tesla shares worth 43 million dollars, and today, Tesla revealed through a mandatory filing with the SEC that Denholm has another 112,390 Tesla shares worth more than 33 million dollars through Merill Lynch.

With this sale, he has sold Tesla shares worth more than 100 million dollars in the last 3 months.
