On June 13, the platform Max will premiere Súper Sara, a documentary directed by Valeria Vegas that explores the lesser-known life of Sara Montiel, whose real name was María Antonia Abad Fernández. Considered one of the most iconic actresses in the history of Spain, Montiel left an indelible mark not only on Spanish cinema but also in Hollywood, where she mingled with great figures like Marlon Brando and Alfred Hitchcock.
A great star not only in Spain
This documentary, which consists of three chapters, delves into Montiel’s humble origins in Campo de Criptana and her remarkable international career. Through intimate and personal material, including never-before-seen tapes, Vegas aims to humanize the artist and reclaim her image as a pioneer in various fields. Montiel was innovative in adopting much earlier than other celebrities and singing in English in the 70s, when few dared to do so.
A highlighted aspect of the documentary is the participation of Luis Fernando Carrasco, a close friend of Montiel, who, for the first time, shares his experience and perspectives. Carrasco provided a unique insight that highlights the controversy Montiel faced throughout her life, including a failed project with Mattel to create Barbies inspired by her, which was canceled after her marriage in 2000.
Valeria Vegas has also expressed interest in addressing the lives of other iconic figures such as Carmen Sevilla, although she has acknowledged the difficulties this entails due to the lack of material. With Súper Sara, Vegas not only seeks to reclaim Montiel but also to highlight her legacy as a true innovator and cultural figure of her time.
