Volvo Cars has officially unveiled the XC70, an all-new plug-in hybrid crossover set to launch in China by late 2026.
This latest offering promises a robust performance with 400 horsepower and an impressive all-electric range of 200 kilometers (approximately 125 miles), marking it as the longest battery-only range among Volvo’s plug-in hybrid lineup.
Designed on the innovative SMA platform tailored for extended-range hybrids, the XC70 responds to the rising demand for longer-range vehicles, particularly in the Chinese market.

Håkan Samuelsson, president and returning CEO of Volvo Cars, emphasized the XC70’s role in the company’s strategic shift towards the extended-range plug-in hybrid segment.
He stated, “The XC70 marks our strategic entry…offering a highly attractive alternative to customers who are not yet ready for fully electric cars.” This approach exemplifies a trend toward regionalization, enabling manufacturers to cater specifically to local consumer needs.
The XC70 shares its platform with the Lynk & Co 08, combining a turbocharged 1.5L engine with dual electric motors for an all-wheel-drive performance. The design features of the XC70 include a closed, shield-like grille inspired by Volvo’s latest all-electric models and cutting-edge Matrix LED headlights that dynamically adapt to various road conditions, enhancing visibility while prioritizing safety.
Despite its modern updates, the XC70 retains styling cues reminiscent of its predecessor, the V70 Cross Country, bridging Volvo’s rich heritage with contemporary styling. With a base price of approximately 400,000 yuan (around $55,000 USD), the XC70 aims to strike a balance between performance, efficiency, and aesthetics.
As anticipation builds for its release, it remains unclear whether the XC70 will be available in markets outside of China. Analysts speculate that a global rollout could strengthen Volvo’s position in the expanding hybrid and electric vehicle segments.
