The 2018 demo of The Last of Us Part II was so brutal that in 2024, even with a PS5, that level of detail is not reached

Many of us remember how we stood up from our chairs at that E3 2018 when Sony presented, for the first time, The Last of Us Part II. It was an open secret, but that didn’t take away our excitement that day.
During this time we have been able to see how graphic analysts put the game to the test, from its presentation to its official launch, including the most recent remaster for PS5. And, truth be told, what we saw in 2018 is impressive.
Does the 2018 trailer look better than the 2024 game?
A few hours ago, a new comparative video of The Last of Us Part II was shared on the internet, highlighting how the upcoming remaster still cannot reach the visual heights seen in the E3 2018 demo.
The comparison, made by Cycu1, shows how the E3 2018 demo is still superior even to the PlayStation 5 remaster in Fidelity Mode in several aspects. Although the character models have improved, the volumetric lighting and other details, such as the way the grass doesn’t seem to be affected by the light correctly at the 5:41 mark, are a clear step back.

In addition to the visual improvements and the two display modes, The Last of Us Part II Remastered includes some additional content, such as cut levels called Lost Levels and the No Return Mode, a roguelite version of the game that further highlights the excellent quality of the gameplay mechanics.
The Last of Us Part II is now available for PlayStation 4. And the remastered version will be released tomorrow, January 19, on PlayStation 5, as well as a release date yet to be confirmed on PC. We will bring you our analysis as soon as we receive our press copy.
