According to an exclusive from Variety, Wonder Man would have been canceled by Disney+. This would be a tremendous surprise because the series would have debuted last March as one of the MCU’s biggest recent releases. With a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an Emmy nomination for Abdul-Mateen, its lead actor, it seemed well positioned for a renewal and to continue for the foreseeable future.
The MCU keeps churning out single-season shows
Especially since, two months after its premiere, its renewal was confirmed. This promised a second season that, now, it seems, will never happen.
The reasons for that are hard to explain. Especially because Disney+ doesn’t reveal exact viewership numbers for its series. What we do know is that Wonder Man made Nielsen’s top 10 streaming chart in its launch week, but it didn’t stay there past the first week. Reaching a modest No. 8.
In any case, the renewal of the series for a second season was, in itself, an anomaly. Practically no live-action Marvel series has had a second season. The exception has been Daredevil: Born Again, whose second season premiered last March and whose third is expected to debut in 2027. And while Wonder Man was expected to follow in Daredevil’s footsteps, it now seems that won’t happen after all.
