Nintendo used a Nintendo Direct celebrating the series’ 40th anniversary to unveil the first trailer for its live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. It also confirmed a few big details at once: the film’s title is simply The Legend of Zelda, the story is new rather than lifted from a single game, and it’s pulling from 40 years of Zelda lore. The worldwide theatrical release is set for April 30, 2027.
That plain, subtitle-free title isn’t an accident. Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto said you’ll understand the reason for it once you’ve seen the movie.
So this isn’t Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, or Breath of the Wild retold on screen. Nintendo says it’s telling an original story built out of four decades of Zelda history, and the Triforce will matter a lot.
Bo Bragason is playing Zelda. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is playing Link. Reported casting also includes Uli Latukefu as Ganon and Dichen Lachman as Impa.
Wes Ball is directing and co-producing alongside Shigeru Miyamoto and producer Avi Arad. That makes this one of Nintendo’s biggest movie swings since The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and a real test of how far the company can go with live-action.
If you’ve been keeping up with The Legend of Zelda or Nintendo’s film plans, the trailer is worth a look, even with reactions still split.
The Legend of Zelda reaches theaters worldwide on April 30, 2027, and Netflix streaming will follow. Filming started in October 2025 and has already wrapped in New Zealand.
