In North America, the range of mainstream electric sedan options remains surprisingly limited, prompting speculation about the potential reintroduction of the Chevy Impala as an all-electric model.
General Motors (GM) appears to be eyeing this gap in the market with the upcoming Wuling Starlight EV 2025, a vehicle that may very well serve as inspiration for a new Impala.
The Wuling Starlight EV 2025 is generating buzz in anticipation of its debut in China, boasting over 315 miles of range under the Chinese Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), which translates to approximately 255 miles on the EPA standard.
Wuling Starlight EV 2025: A Possible Inspiration for GM’s New Impala
While its dimensions closely resemble those of the 2007 Impala, with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm and larger cabin space suitable for four to five adults, this modern EV’s design aligns well with contemporary automotive aesthetics.
Reports indicate that the Starlight EV will incorporate several noteworthy upgrades, including a redesigned exterior and an interior featuring a new steering wheel, enhanced dashboard, and improved soft-touch materials. The interior refresh aims to elevate passenger comfort and align the vehicle with Wuling’s contemporary branding.
A hybrid variant is also set to debut, promising an impressive 1,100 km (approximately 685 miles) of range on a full tank and charge combination, which could make it more appealing for U.S. consumers.
With increasing consumer interest in hybrids, some industry insiders suggest that it may be wise for GM to introduce the hybrid version of the Wuling Starlight EV in the U.S. market first, rather than the fully electric model. GM’s renewed focus on electric sedans could reignite enthusiasm for familiar nameplates, ensuring that the legacy of vehicles like the Impala continues in an eco-conscious automotive landscape.
