The Hollywood writers and actors strike are muddying the waters in the industry like never before. The studio and platform system doesn’t seem willing to back down, and workers are becoming increasingly weary of conditions that fall far short of their desires.
Amidst this wave of troubles, Warner has just been dealt another blow. In the midst of the promotional campaign for The Nun 2, set to premiere on September 8th, the actress portraying this terrifying character, Bonnie Aarons, has filed a complaint against the studio. The reason? According to her statements, it’s for allegedly reducing a portion of her earnings from the marketing of her image and concealing the profits generated through it.
The release of The Nun 2 is in jeopardy
The lawsuit not only targets Warner but also includes New Line Cinema and Scope Productions. The actress earned a mere $71,500 for her role in The Nun (2018), from a budget of $22 million and profits of $365 million. Anticipating such a scenario, Aarons’ contract included bonuses of $175,000 and a share in the character’s exploitation earnings.
However, the latter aspect seems to be falling short on Warner’s end, and that’s what the actress has denounced, claiming that the agreed upon terms are not being honored: a prorated 5% share of 50% of the gross revenues. ‘Rather than transparently account for and pay, Warner Bros. obfuscates and conceals the actual amount of Ms. Aarons’ rightful participation in marketing revenues, all the while continuing to exploit her,’ the lawsuit outlines.
Aarons believes that the earnings she has received for the exploitation of her image are ‘inconsistent with extensive commercial activities.’ Consequently, she feels deceived by a major studio, which, as we reiterate, is navigating a challenging period due to the ongoing strikes. While Warner and New Line Cinema have not issued statements, this lawsuit has the potential to disrupt the marketing campaign for the upcoming film.
