Dire Wolf has announced War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time, an officially licensed The Wheel of Time board game due in 2027. So yes, this is a tabletop continuation of the franchise, not the TV comeback some people were still hoping to see.
Dire Wolf is developing it as a two-player grand-strategy game that covers events from The Shadow Rising through the end of the Third Age. According to the studio, it will feature faction conflict, military campaigns, army command, Seanchan clashes, Two Rivers battles, miniatures, maps, multiple play modes, and a deluxe The One Power edition, also slated for 2027.
This shouldn’t be taken as a sign that Amazon is bringing the show back. Prime Video canceled The Wheel of Time after season 3 in early 2025, reportedly because the series was expensive and the audience wasn’t large enough to justify that cost at Amazon’s scale. Some people also felt Amazon’s fantasy attention was drifting more toward The Rings of Power, even as plenty of fans thought season 3 was an improvement and showrunner Rafe Judkins wanted to keep going.
If you’re still keeping up with The Wheel of Time, this one looks like it could be worth picking up when it arrives. Dire Wolf’s Kickstarter pulled in more than $1.16 million from over 6,100 backers.
Meanwhile, iWot Studios and Initiate Entertainment still have animated series, animated films, video games, a planned AAA open-world RPG, and the young-adult prequel film The White Tower in development.
You can keep an eye on Dire Wolf ahead of the 2027 retail release.
