Although Apple has not made any official announcement, the latest leaks suggest that the Diary app is about to undergo a radical transformation thanks to integration with Apple Intelligence. A recent patent (via The Mac Observer) gives us a glimpse of what the future of this app could be, which, although already very useful, has room for improvement.
Best recommendations, more personal and more timely
The Diary app, launched as part of iOS 17.2, has so far functioned as a place to record memories and experiences using elements such as photos and music, as well as details of locations and communications. The main idea of the app is not to offer a blank sheet, but to actively suggest points of reflection and elements to write about.
The patent reveals Apple’s possible plans to take this proactivity to a new level thanks to artificial intelligence. The integration of Apple Intelligence will allow the app not only to suggest when to record a memory, but also how to do it. For example, it could prompt us to create an entry after completing a workout or taking multiple photos in the same location, making the suggestions more personal and tailored to our usage patterns.
Other examples of integration that are mentioned would be a deeper understanding of calendar events and reminders, which important sources of information. Along this line, Apple Intelligence would allow making recommendations regarding certain events even before they happen and/or afterward, which is interesting as long as the context of what they represent is well understood.
Beyond its proactivity, another very significant change that the patent shows is a new timeline interface. This would present the events of the day as if they were conversations in a chat, instead of the current card format.
It is worth noting that, unlike other types of leaks, the changes we propose here are based solely on a patent. On the one hand, this offers more credibility; however, these changes may never be implemented. There is a long way from the patent to the finished product. What is clear is that the direction taken by Apple with the Diary app is a very interesting app that invites us to reflect intelligently.
