When a severely injured woman and an unharmed girl are discovered in a German forest after a hit-and-run, a dark web of secrets surrounding their identities begins to unravel. This could be one of Netflix’s great series.
Based on Romy Hausman’s eponymous novel, an international bestseller, “Dear Child” (or “Liebes Kind” in its original German) explores the connection between the couple’s harrowing escape from captivity and a 13-year-old missing persons case.
This thrilling six-episode miniseries, adapted for the small screen, weaves the current investigators’ desperate search to solve the multiple mysteries at play with flashbacks to the years the woman, the girl, and the boy spent locked away for nearly a decade in a windowless house at the mercy of their captor.
An immediate worldwide success
Since it started airing on Netflix on September 7th, “Mi Dulce Niña” has achieved an audience approval rating of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and has secured the number 1 spot on FlixPatrol’s list of the most popular Netflix series worldwide.
Some viewers have even taken to social media to encourage others to start watching the series, with one Twitter user calling it “one of the best binge-watches I’ve had in years,” and another describing it as “a must-watch if you enjoy psychological thrillers [and] murder mysteries.”
The series begins with a chilling scene in which the woman and the two children are happily playing a game before hearing the telltale signs of the man’s arrival home.
The three hurry to stand in front of the door with their hands open to show they’re not hiding anything. After inspecting the children’s hands, the man gives each of them a sandwich to eat.
But when he looks at the trembling woman’s hands, there’s a strange mark imprinted on her palm that he seems to disapprove of. Sinisterly, he says, “You must not cry in front of the children, Lena. You know the rules.”
