Many iPhone users rely on screenshots to remember interesting locations seen online or in social media posts. Now Google Maps has introduced a feature that turns those screenshots into saved places, saving users time and hassle. Powered by Gemini, this new capability transforms how we store and revisit location-based content.
A smarter way to save places from screenshots
The new feature appears in the ‘You’ tab of the Google Maps app under a section called “Screenshots”, where a badge invites users to “Try it out.” Once the user grants Google Maps access to their photos, the app detects screenshots containing location data and prompts the user to review and save them.
Instead of manually searching for places seen in Instagram stories, TikTok videos, or travel posts, users can now simply screenshot a location and let Google Maps do the rest. A notification appears within the app when new locations are ready for review, and users can choose whether or not to add them to their saved list.
Gemini integration adds even more intelligence
Thanks to Gemini, Google Maps not only identifies the locations but also enables quick access to directions and additional details. The process is seamless, efficient, and removes the need to jump between apps or rely on memory. Users can also retroactively add older screenshots to the list, giving them greater control over their saved locations.
While the feature is currently exclusive to iOS, Google has hinted that Android support will follow soon, making this intelligent system accessible to more users. For those who frequently explore new places online, this tool feels tailor-made.
