North American theaters had a huge weekend. Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to an estimated $355 million domestically, while The Odyssey pushed past $700 million worldwide. Put together, those two runs helped drive the domestic market above $400 million for the frame, based on weekend box-office estimates.
The eye-catcher, though, is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It posted the second-biggest North American opening ever, behind only Avengers: Endgame, and set a $168 million opening-day record, according to weekend box-office estimates. Current projections have it landing somewhere between $875 million and $925 million worldwide. Reviews have been mixed, but that hasn’t slowed demand, and a lot of the audience response has centered on Tom Holland and Zendaya’s chemistry.
Then there’s The Odyssey, which has now reached $395.5 million domestically and is looking at a $51 million third weekend, according to current box-office projections. It also now appears headed for $1 billion worldwide. Strong word of mouth, plus some of the best reviews any summer release has gotten, has turned it into both a prestige play and a real commercial hit.
For people who follow the theatrical business closely, this stretch says a lot. Since 2017, films featuring Tom Holland and Zendaya have brought in more than $11.2 billion worldwide in cumulative box-office grosses. If these numbers hold, the latest totals could make them the highest-grossing acting couple ever, while also reinforcing their status as Hollywood’s safest bet when it comes to getting people into theaters.
