Top Gun 3 is in development, but nobody sounds interested in pushing it forward just to get another sequel made. Glen Powell says Tom Cruise won’t move ahead unless everyone involved believes they can make something that tops Top Gun: Maverick. Ehren Kruger is working on the script, Joseph Kosinski has said there’s more story left to tell with Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, and the project is still early enough in the creative process that there’s no release date yet.
That cautious pace makes sense. Rather than rushing into a follow-up, the team seems to be asking a harder question first: is there actually a story here that’s strong enough to justify coming back?
Powell says Cruise’s main condition is pretty simple, even if meeting it isn’t. Kruger is still writing while the project stays in that early creative phase, and Powell says he only knows the “broad strokes” at this point and hasn’t read a finished draft.
Kosinski has been saying something similar from the director’s side. He believes there’s more story to tell with Maverick, but only if the idea is good enough to carry another movie.
And the bar was always going to be high.
Top Gun: Maverick made nearly $1.5 billion worldwide on a reported $177 million budget. It became the biggest hit of Tom Cruise’s career, won the Oscar for Best Sound, and drew praise for pairing huge aerial action with the emotional core that has always been central to the franchise.
If what they want is a sequel that earns its place instead of playing it safe, this sounds like the kind of approach that’s worth waiting for. There’s still no release date, but Tom Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer, expected back and Glen Powell are all expected back.
