Treasure Island, a six-part series that premiered on MGM+ in the U.S. on October 11, 2026, takes Robert Louis Stevenson’s pirate tale in a darker direction than the version people usually know.
This isn’t a straight Stevenson retelling. The series centers on Captain Flint’s hidden fortune, with Jim Hawkins, played by Tom Sweet, relying on his near-photographic memory to track it down. The whole thing leans harder into danger, deception, and shifting loyalties than clean, straightforward swashbuckling.
There are some big changes, too. Hayley Atwell’s Bess Hawkins is no side figure here, she’s central to Jim’s coming-of-age story. Jim and Bess already know there’s a darker side to Long John Silver after Billy Bones. Jack Huston’s Aaron Graham brings another layer of mistrust. And David Oyelowo’s version of Long John Silver is a formerly enslaved Caribbean man, a change Oyelowo has said was essential for him to take the role.
For anyone in the mood for a revisionist pirate drama, Treasure Island sounds like it may be worth a look, even with the split reaction. Reviews and audience responses have been mixed: people have praised the cast and the tension, but they’ve also called the series flat, repetitive, and a little short, especially at a moment when One Piece, Our Flag Means Death, Sandokan: The Pirate Prince, and fresh Pirates of the Caribbean talk are all in the air.
