Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs have signed a multi-year licensing deal, and they’re using it to build a new consumer music platform for fans around licensed tracks from UMG’s catalog. You can’t download anything yet. The companies say the service is still in development.
According to Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs, the first consumer product will let people make remixes, mashups, alternate versions, and personalized vocal content using participating artists, all inside a label-approved setup that gives rightsholders an official seat at the table. What they haven’t shared is just as notable: compensation terms, revenue splits, artist opt-ins, remix limits, or how much songwriters will actually be able to see.
This says a lot about where the big labels are heading. Not long ago, companies like Suno and Udio were getting sued; now the same space is producing licensing deals. Universal Music Group has already cut partnerships with Stability AI and NVIDIA. ElevenLabs, which launched in 2022, has gone from voice tech company to synthetic media startup, hit a valuation above $11 billion by early 2026, and had already signed deals with Merlin and Kobalt that helped establish revenue-sharing templates.
If the idea of messing around with familiar songs inside an official, licensed service sounds appealing, this is probably one to keep an eye on when it launches. Critics still have real concerns, though. They argue that AI deals backed by major labels could cheapen music, push independent creators further to the side, and hand even more control to the biggest rights owners.
For now, there’s nothing to download. The platform itself is still being built as a consumer service by Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs.
