Five anime that can be your next obsession and that have just premiered or are about to.
Pseudo-Harem
Probably one of the most unexpected romantic comedies was this Giji Harem. Eiji Kitahama is a boy who wants to be popular and Rin Nanakura is a girl who wants to be an actress. To help him, she decides to create a whole harem of girls who act affectionately around him with her acting skills. Something that will bring them closer romantically, even though Kitahama seems unable to understand the intentions behind Nanakura.
What we have seen so far is a sweet and funny story that focuses not only on the interactions between the two main characters, but also on their daily lives. It is worth highlighting the design work with Nanakura and the work done by her voice actress, Saori Hayami, who demonstrates an absolutely amazing versatility. So much so, that she even sings the opening song of the series. One of those series that may go unnoticed by many, but is surprisingly tender.
Isekai Suicide Squad
There’s nothing surprising here. We’ve been talking a lot about Isekai Suicide Squad. We had high hopes for this project from Wit Studios and Warner Bros. Japan and we have to admit one thing: the bets seem to have paid off. Because although in the past anime adaptations of American intellectual properties have not always been excellent, it seems that they have finally hit the mark.
Full of action and humor, with excellent character design and all the nonsense you can expect from the Suicide Squad, it works as both a fantasy story and a DC superhero story. And as an isekai? Perhaps it doesn’t follow what is expected today from this kind of stories, being more of an excuse to confront the Suicide Squad with a fantasy world, but that’s fine when the result is this fun.
Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian
We return to romantic comedies, this time with much more emphasis on that particular aspect of the work. And it is that Tokidoki Bosotto Russia-go de Dereru Tonari no Alya-san starts from a very simple premise: a half Russian, half Japanese girl named Alisa Mikhailovna Kujou, who has captivated all the boys in school, only has eyes for Masachika Kuze, an unremarkable boy whom she is unnecessarily harsh with at times. Later confessing her feelings for him in perfect Russian.
If it’s easy to see the tangle, maybe the twist is less predictable: Kuze is not so unremarkable because he can speak Russian. Mikhailovna Kujou doesn’t know this and Kuze has no intention of telling her. The whole story revolves around the tangles that will be generated by the fact that she believes she is safe behind her second native language and the fact that he is not as flat and gray as he seems, in a conventional romantic comedy, with a twist that will satisfy even the biggest fans of the genre.
Oshi no Ko (Second season)
Oshi no Ko is a series that caused a stir when it premiered in its first season. On one hand, due to its excellent animation and thrilling script and narrative. On the other hand, due to a notable lack of tact when taking inspiration from certain real events to create one of its storylines. Something that has not prevented, or perhaps has even encouraged, the release of its second season, where they will continue to delve into the dark side of the acting world.
In this second season, the protagonist, Aqua, will continue seeking revenge against his father, guilty of his mother’s death. To do so, he will join a theater group where he hopes to discover the identity of his father, and in the process, he will have to work on a play alongside other familiar faces, which will end in a brutal competition where he can’t dedicate anything less than all his efforts. Promising a second season as interesting or even more than its first season.
My Deer Friend Nokotan
Everyone is talking about this anime. No, seriously. If you’ve heard of the “deer girl anime”, this is it. And the truth is that’s the perfect description of the anime. There’s a school where a troubled girl wants to redeem herself and then a girl with deer horns is specifically transferred to her school and class. Around them, many extremely violent, chaotic, and nonsensical things happen. Everyone thinks these things are absolutely normal. Not this poor former delinquent.
Surrealistic, twisted and full of madness, just by watching the first episode you already know if this series is for you or not. In fact, you know it just by answering one question. Do you find gags based on violent and surreal humor funny, especially when one person doesn’t understand what’s happening? If the answer is yes, that’s it. This is your summer series. And you’re going to enjoy it like a deer in a forest clearing.
