If I ask you about Ironheart, you might think it’s just Iron Man but in the body of an African American teenager, right? Well, you would be mistaken, because a new trailer for the streaming series has been released, showcasing Riri Williams in a fresh and exciting direction. In this preview, we can see how the protagonist takes a magical approach to her story and armor, a notable shift from her representation in the comics, where her armor is entirely technological and a product of her own ingenuity. This evolution seems to arise mainly in response to her antagonist, The Hood, who possesses demonic powers that push Riri to incorporate magical elements into her armor.
Demons against magic? Of course.
In the trailer, Riri seems to infuse her technology with a type of magic that resembles the energy signature of Doctor Strange’s spells. This dynamic approach contrasts with the interpretation we saw of Ironheart in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where Riri started with an improvised suit before accessing advanced Wakandan technology. However, the plot of Ironheart delves into her confrontation with The Hood, which motivates her to explore the use of magic to defeat him.
Despite the fact that in the comics Riri has no background as a magic user in the comics, she has had contact with demonic forces. During her time in the young heroes team called The Champions, Riri was possessed by Blackheart, the son of Mephisto, which represents an interesting nexus by combining her story with magic. Additionally, Ironheart’s magical debut could open new opportunities within the extensive narrative universe of Marvel.
Ironheart premieres on Disney Plus on June 24, marking the conclusion of Marvel’s Phase 5. Subsequently, Phase 6 will begin with Fantastic Four in July, followed by Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
