Microsoft has been trying to position Xbox consoles in the Japanese market for years; however, local players continue to show disinterest in their products.
Although the Xbox Series X|S has outsold its predecessor, the Xbox One, with approximately 600,000 units sold in Japan, this figure is still insufficient compared to the 1.6 million Xbox 360, which is the brand’s best-performing console in the country.
It’s hard to develop for the console
The challenges for Microsoft are considerable. Most indie studios in Japan, such as Edelweiss, the developer behind Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, face resource limitations that prevent them from bringing their games to the Xbox Series X|S.
In recent statements, the artist and Koichi stated that, although he has a deep affection for Xbox, his team cannot afford to expand to so many platforms due to costs and the lack of interest in the Japanese market. “It’s not profitable for them to make a port,” he explained.
Additionally, the absence of Xbox on the shelves of major stores in Japan further contributes to the lack of visibility and attraction towards the console. In 2025, Xbox sales in the country reached a surprising low, with only 31,226 consoles sold, representing a 73.4% drop compared to the previous year.
In light of this situation, Microsoft has acknowledged the frustration of players in Japan and has admitted that it needs to make significant changes to improve its image and relevance in the market.
There are rumors suggesting that the company may be considering a renewed approach to the development of exclusive titles, which could be a crucial strategy to regain interest in its platform within the Asian country.
