The developer Christian Selig, known for his work with Apollo, has seen his latest creation, Juno, removed from the App Store following a complaint from YouTube. Juno, an application designed to watch YouTube videos on the Vision Pro, allowed us to enjoy what YouTube does not officially offer: an optimized environment for the device.
Goodbye to Juno, and no replacement on the horizon
The conflict began in April when YouTube warned Selig that Juno was violating its Terms of Service by modifying the native interface of YouTube.com and using iconography that could be confusing to users. In response, Selig adjusted Juno, using the web player instead of the embedded one, and made clear warnings that Juno was not an official YouTube application. Despite these changes, YouTube filed a complaint with Apple, which ultimately resulted in Juno being removed from the App Store.
Selig has expressed his disagreement with the decision, arguing that Juno was simply a web view that adjusted the CSS to create a more tailored experience for VisionOS, Vision Pro’s operating system. Nevertheless, he has decided not to appeal the decision, partly due to his previous experience with similar disputes, such as the one he had with Reddit.
YouTube does not allow its iPad app to work on the Vision Pro and has stated that it has no plans to develop a dedicated version of its app. While Meta launches Orion, YouTube has managed to eliminate a very interesting alternative without offering its own solution. With Juno out of the game, on the Vision Pro—a device centered around content consumption—we will have to continue using Safari to watch YouTube content.
