In 2026, a run of American classics from the 1970s is back in view: Taxi Driver, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Chinatown, and The Godfather Part II. They’re showing up again in theaters, turning up in restorations, and finding a younger crowd that’s watching them for the first time.
They still sit at the center of 1970s New Hollywood. That was the moment when the old studio system was losing its grip, and directors were making films that felt darker, riskier, and more personal, shaped by Vietnam, Watergate, urban decline, public distrust, damaged heroes, and institutions that looked rotten all the way through.
Taxi Driver (1976), Martin Scorsese and Paul Schrader’s study of Travis Bickle, follows a lonely Vietnam veteran through the sleepless nights of New York. His insomnia, sexual frustration, isolation, disgust, and his idea of “saving” Iris slowly harden into violent purpose. It won the Palme d’Or in 1976, it’s still screening in 2026, and you can still see its fingerprints on later psychological dramas. Milos Forman’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, released in 1975, takes Randle McMurphy’s fight with Nurse Ratched, medication, routines, shame, and fake compassion and turns it into something funny and political, a battle over freedom and conformity.
Then there’s Chinatown and The Godfather Part II, both from 1974, working at the height of American movies’ fascination with corruption and moral ambiguity. Chinatown picked up 11 Oscar nominations. The Godfather Part II became the rare sequel on an epic scale that actually matched the original, winning 6 Oscars, including Best Picture, and it’s still widely seen as one of the greatest sequels ever made.
If you want to understand why that decade still hangs over American cinema, start with these. You can catch Taxi Driver in current screenings, Chinatown in its 50th-anniversary 4K restoration, and The Godfather Part II through the 2022 restorations of the full Godfather trilogy.
